Cutting Oils Neat & Water-Mix

Mineral & SyntheticSmooth Cut 20Turning · Milling · Grinding

Cooling and lubrication at the tool edge for turning, milling, drilling and grinding — for a better finish, longer tool life and rust protection. The series comes in mineral and synthetic grades, so the fluid can follow the job.

Choosing between neat and water-mix

Neat cutting oil is used straight from the drum. It lubricates very well, which suits tapping, broaching, gear cutting and deep-hole drilling, but it removes heat poorly.

Water-mix fluids — soluble and semi-synthetic — are concentrates diluted with water. The water carries the heat away and the oil lubricates, which is why most CNC turning and machining centres run one of them for general work.

Whichever you run, check the sump every day: concentration, tramp oil and smell. Most cutting fluid problems start with the wrong mix.

Cutting Oils FAQs

Which cutting oil do I need?
It depends on the operation, the metal and the machine. Water-mix fluids (soluble or semi-synthetic) suit general turning, milling and drilling; neat oil suits tapping, broaching, gear cutting and deep-hole drilling; grinding often runs a semi-synthetic or grinding oil. Send us your machines, materials and operations and we will recommend the grade.
What is the difference between neat and soluble cutting oil?
Neat cutting oil is used straight from the drum, without water. It lubricates very well and suits tapping, broaching, gear cutting and deep-hole drilling, but it removes heat poorly. Soluble cutting oil is a concentrate mixed with water into a milky emulsion. The water cools and the oil lubricates, which makes it the usual choice for general turning, milling and drilling on CNC and conventional machines.
What is Haruto Smooth Cut 20?
A cutting oil from the Haruto Cutting Oil Series, labelled Synthetic Blend and supplied in a 5 L pack. Its label states it is designed for enhanced cooling and heat dissipation, lubricity for a better surface finish, longer tool life and stable performance under high-speed machining. Ask for the data sheet for the mix ratio and the metals it suits.
How do I check the concentration of a water-mix cutting fluid?
Use a hand-held refractometer. Take a sample from the flowing coolant, put a few drops on the prism, read the Brix scale and multiply by the refractometer factor on the product data sheet to get concentration in per cent. Skim tramp oil first because it distorts the reading.
What pack sizes are available?
Smooth Cut 20 comes in a 5 L pack. For bulk use we supply 210 L barrels (180 kg). Ask us for other pack sizes and distributor terms.
