Greases FAQs

What does NLGI 2 grease mean?
NLGI grades describe a grease's consistency (stiffness), from very soft (NLGI 000) to hard (NLGI 6). NLGI 2 is the most common general-purpose consistency — firm enough to stay in bearings but soft enough to feed. Lower grades suit centralised systems and low temperatures; higher grades suit vertical surfaces and high temperatures.
What is the difference between lithium and lithium complex grease?
Standard lithium grease is an excellent multipurpose grease with a dropping point around 180-190 degrees C. Lithium complex grease uses a complex soap structure that raises the dropping point above 250 degrees C and improves high-temperature life, load-carrying and water resistance — making it better for hot, heavily loaded applications.
Which grease is best for high temperature?
For sustained high temperatures, choose lithium complex, polyurea or calcium sulphonate greases, which hold up far better than standard lithium. The right pick depends on temperature, load, speed and any water exposure — tell us the application and we will recommend a grade.
Can different greases be mixed?
Mixing greases with incompatible thickeners (for example lithium with polyurea) can break down the structure and cause softening or leakage. When switching grease types, purge the old grease out rather than topping up. Use a compatibility chart or ask us before mixing.
