What is the difference between GL-4 and GL-5 gear oil?
Both are API automotive gear-oil performance levels. GL-5 carries a higher dose of extreme-pressure additive for hypoid axles and differentials under high load; GL-4 has a lower EP level suited to manual gearboxes and synchromesh units. Using GL-5 where GL-4 is specified can, in some yellow-metal synchros, cause corrosion — always follow the OEM spec.
Which ISO VG should I use for an industrial gearbox?
It depends on the gearbox maker's specification, speed and load. ISO VG 220 and 320 are the most common for enclosed industrial gears; slower, heavily loaded reducers may need 460 or 680. Check the OEM plate or manual, or send us the details.
Can I use automotive gear oil in an industrial gearbox?
Generally no. Automotive GL-5 oils and industrial CLP gear oils use different additive systems. Use an industrial DIN 51517 CLP grade for industrial gearboxes and an API GL grade for automotive axles.
