The 15W is the cold-start (winter) viscosity rating — lower means easier cold starts — and 40 is the viscosity at 100 degrees C operating temperature. 15W-40 is a multigrade oil that flows well on start-up and holds a protective film when hot, which is why it is the most popular grade for Indian diesel fleets and tractors.
