Buying Hydraulic Oil 68 in Bulk: Brands, Pack Sizes & What to Check

Hydraulic oil 68 is one of the highest-volume industrial oils in India. It runs excavators and backhoe loaders on construction sites, hydraulic presses and injection-moulding machines in factories, and power packs in steel, cement and paper plants. If you are the person who buys it by the drum, this guide is for you. It covers what the grade means, the names it is sold under, how to choose pack sizes, and what to check before you place a bulk order.

If you are still deciding which hydraulic grade your system needs, start with our hydraulic oil selection guide. For excavators specifically, see hydraulic oil for JCB and excavators.

What “hydraulic oil 68” actually means

  • 68 is the ISO viscosity grade (ISO VG 68). The oil’s kinematic viscosity at 40 °C falls within 61.2 to 74.8 cSt, which is ±10% of 68.
  • AW means anti-wear. Additives protect vane, gear and piston pumps under high pressure.
  • HLP and HM are standard names for the same family. HLP comes from DIN 51524 Part 2 and HM from ISO 11158. Different brands print different names for anti-wear VG 68 oil.
  • When 68 is the right choice: high-pressure systems, outdoor mobile equipment and hot ambient conditions. Many indoor machines in India’s roughly 20 to 40 °C range run on VG 46 instead. Always follow the equipment manual.

Choosing pack sizes for bulk buying

PackBest suited to
20 L / 26 L pailsTop-ups, small power packs, site vehicles, dealers selling to workshops
50 LMedium machines and workshops with steady monthly use
210 L drumsPlants, contractors and fleets doing full oil changes or high monthly consumption

Work out your need from system capacity × number of machines × changes per year, then add a top-up reserve. Store drums under cover and off the ground, ideally lying on their side with the bungs at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions. This keeps water from collecting around the openings. Water and dust are the two biggest enemies of hydraulic oil in storage.

Bulk buying checklist for hydraulic oil 68

  • Specification match. Confirm ISO VG 68 plus the performance standard your OEM asks for (for example DIN 51524 Part 2 HLP or ISO 11158 HM). Check whether the manual calls for a special type, such as zinc-free or high viscosity index (HV).
  • Product data sheet. Check viscosity at 40 °C, viscosity index, flash point and pour point against your requirement.
  • Batch traceability. Every drum should carry a batch number and manufacturing date.
  • Sealed, clean packs. Reject drums with broken seals, rust or dents at the bungs.
  • Compatibility when switching. Do not mix hydraulic oils of different chemistry without checking compatibility. When changing supplier, drain and flush as your OEM advises.
  • Supply reliability. Ask about stock availability, delivery lead time to your site and consistency from batch to batch.

Signs your hydraulic oil 68 needs attention

Buying the right oil in bulk only pays off if it is changed at the right time. Watch for these warning signs between scheduled changes:

  • Milky or cloudy oil: usually water contamination from condensation, washing or a damaged seal.
  • Dark colour with a burnt smell: the oil is oxidising, often because the system is running too hot.
  • Foaming or noisy pumps: air entering the system, a low reservoir level or tired anti-foam additives.
  • Slow, jerky movement or overheating: the viscosity may have drifted or the filters may be blocked.
  • Filters clogging faster than usual: dirt or sludge is building up in the system.

For large systems and fleets, a simple oil analysis at regular intervals turns guesswork into planned changes. It also shows how much oil to keep in stock.

Tip: most hydraulic failures blamed on oil are really caused by contamination. Clean transfer containers, filtered top-ups and closed drums protect your pumps as much as the choice of oil.

Haruto hydraulic oil 68 (AW 68) for bulk buyers

It is designed for high-pressure systems, outdoor mobile equipment and hot ambient conditions. It offers anti-wear protection for vane, gear and piston pumps, oxidation and thermal stability, water separation, foam resistance and rust protection. It is available in 1, 5, 10, 20, 26, 50 and 210 litre packs, with the same oil also offered in VG 32 and VG 46. Full grade details are on our hydraulic oils page.

Frequently asked questions

Is hydraulic oil 68 the same as AW 68 or HLP 68?
They describe the same family: anti-wear hydraulic oil in ISO viscosity grade 68. HLP comes from DIN 51524 Part 2 and HM from ISO 11158, and brands use different names on their packs. Always check the actual specification on the data sheet.
Which pack size should I buy?
Use 20 or 26 litre pails for top-ups, small power packs and resale to workshops, and 210 litre drums for plants, contractors and fleets doing full oil changes. Store drums under cover and off the ground to keep water and dust out.
Can I switch to a different brand of hydraulic oil 68?
Usually yes, if the new oil meets the specification in your equipment manual. Check compatibility, avoid mixing oils of different chemistry, and drain and flush the system as your OEM advises when you change supplier.
