Mix in a clean container before filling, using clean water — soft or demineralised water leaves less scale. If the vehicle or engine maker specifies a different strength, follow the maker.

The cooling system capacity is in the vehicle or engine manual. Round up to the next full pack and keep the rest for top-ups.
Water on its own boils and freezes at its own fixed points and lets rust and scale build up in the radiator and engine passages. Scale insulates, so the engine runs hotter even when the radiator looks full.
A coolant at the right mix raises the margin against boiling, guards against freezing and protects the metal in the cooling system. Check the level when the engine is cold, and top up with the same coolant and mix.
